I try to use food color because it is an absolute liquid and colour can run easily. Of course, most importantly it is cheap.

You can also take caro syrup and spread all over a paper with a sponge,then put drops of food coloring on the paper..it is called sunburst!! Let it dry flat..(it dries better that way..but, it sure is pretty when you add different colors one on top of another color !!) also you can use water colors too..if no food coloring!!
