Originally I was set on a colour laser MF, and this is the only one I can afford, it seems ok, apart from maybe the print quality, then I found the inkjet which seems quite good, but I am a bit worried about having to replace inks all the time.

I would like to use it for printing sheet music, colour documents, a couple photocopies and duplex black and white documents preferably. I would also like it to be able to connect to a home network. Out of these two, what would you suggest? Much appreciated, thanks

For printers, you would have to ask yourself what do you usually print. If you print occationally, do not print much at once and require printing of photos, you can go with an inkjet. However, if you want more ink economy and want cheaper cost per page and usually print more text, you can go for a monochrome laser printer, which is about the same price as a injet.

The advantage of a laser printer is that it prints black and white text very fast (Slowest laser printer can compete with the faster injet printer). Furthermore, one set of ink can print thousands of pages (depends on model). However, the machine is much more expensive than injet and it cannot print color quickly. The image quality when printed in color by color laser printer is also not as good as injet. The toner left behind is also toxic and needs to be clean once in a while.

For Injet, the advantage is that it can print photos in high quality and the machine cost is low. However, the cost is offset by the ink price as each ink cartridge can print only hundred documents or so and the original ink cartridge is expensive. Furthermore, it is slower than the laser printer. On the long run, the injet can cost more than the laser printer due to the cost of the consumable. Furthermore, if left alone for a prolong period of time without printing, the ink would clog at the head of the ink cartridge and the printer would not work unless the print head is changed. Newer models of printer has a removable print head attached to the ink cartridge but older models do not have a replacable print head and the entire printer must be replaced.

As for brands, I have heard that canon is better in term of support but I have not bought either brands before.
